A Beginners Guide to Sustainability

Description

If you want to learn what significant changes you need to make to improve your well-being, reduce your carbon footprint and reduce your living costs, then this is the course for you!

Participants will learn how to create healthier homes, save money on shopping and power bills, and meet other like-minded people also wanting to make changes.

The programme focuses on practical tips through a series of sessions on energy efficiency, waste reduction, smart shopping choices, transport, simple alternatives to chemicals, conserving water, composting, and growing organic vegetables at home.

The Sustainable Living programme is fun with lots of friendly discussion and easy to use information available in print and by email. It suggests how small lifestyle changes in many households will add up to a big difference to the New Zealand environment.

Week 3 - Waste, recycling and composting - Barbara Hammonds
Week 4 - Ethical shopping - Jen Harries
Week 5 - Gardening basics 1 - planting, seasons, positioning, organics, soil health, companion
              growing, edible flowers - Rachel Eckersley
Week 6 - Gardening basics 2 - including making a compost, worm farming, housing chickens, 
              growing your own seedlings, seed collection - Rachel Eckersley
Week 7 - Eco-building design and home modifications - Miranda Palmer
Week 8 - Water - Dan Woolley

A group discussion workshop on Sustainability is currently being organised for term 2 - so keep an eye out as more details to follow!

 
The Sustainable Living Programme has been brought to New Plymouth in partnership with the New Plymouth District Council, Ministry for the Environment, Hive Taranaki and Positive Futures Trust.
